Is the Kea Crampon right for me?

Do you ever go hiking in-bounds at ski areas, or ski touring without full crampons?

No?

Carry on scrolling.

Yes?

Check it out- we might have the thing for you to increase your confidence to access great terrain.

The Kea Crampon was developed to elevate people's safety when skiing, touring and hiking. It's important to understand when they should and shouldn't be used.

When shouldn't you use the Kea Crampon?

First and foremost, the Kea Crampon is not a full boot crampon. They are a very small set of front points that attach to the front of a tech insert ski boot. There are no mid or rear points, which is what makes them much smaller and lighter than full crampons.

There are times and conditions that require all of the points of a full crampon, and in these conditions the Kea Crampon is not the tool for the job.

In these conditions you know you'll need full crampons, and you should 100% take them with you.

Who aren't the Kea Crampons for?

If you're someone that has a set of full crampons with you at all times, no matter what, and you're stoked on that then that's awesome- the Kea Crampons aren't for you.

Who are the Kea Crampons for then?

The Kea Crampon is a great option if you currently don't take full crampons every time when you go hiking in-bounds at ski areas, or ski touring.

We know from experience that this is a lot of people.

You could be on a day touring trip from a ski field, an overnight trip in known terrain, or even in-bounds days at ski fields with hiking terrain- if you're in New Zealand think of Olympus, Temple Basin, Treble Cone, The Remarks etc.

There are many reasons why people chose not to take full crampons when touring or in-bounds hiking.

  • They know the terrain

  • They have a good idea what the conditions will be

  • They're happy with the weather forecast

  • They're inbounds and don't have a pack

The list goes on.

You can still get caught out when conditions change or aren't what you expected. Maybe the hike up was icier that you thought, or you saw an epic line that had a technical hike to get in.

In these cases, a set of front points could have been all you needed to get you up safely, and your skis to get you down.

This is where the Kea Crampon shines.

The Kea Crampon removes the barriers of "too heavy" or "too big" that cause people to not take full crampons.

They are designed to live at the bottom of your pack, in your ski crampons or even stash away in your pocket on in-bounds days.

whole idea is to increase safety, not reduce it.
